Inhaltsangabe: Fredrick Schepp stepped off a German steamer in New York in 1853 to seek his fortune on American soil. The dream led him and his mail-order bride, Franziska, to Kansas where their initial investment of $640 bought a piece of virgin prairie that remains in the family to this day. The Schepps and their two sons, Albert and Herman, found hardship and heartbreak while sod busting in Kansas. From their first dugout home carved from the prairie earth to magnificent stone homes on Deep Creek in the land of Oz comes a family saga spanning the generations with stories of men and women as rugged as the terrain and the trying times. Through wars, dust bowls, and the Great Depression?the stories passed through the generations are too true to be fiction. Now scattered to Nebraska and Oklahoma, the fourth-generation of Schepps live the American dream. But getting there for the last century and a half, the Schepp family has experienced success, failure, desertion, divorce, alcoholism, wealth, poverty, secrets, kidnapping, and even murder. The colorful characters on the family tree include a recluse, a philanderer, an inventor, architects, dreamers, schemers, and the mail-order bride and her stubborn German husband who started the Schepp family chronicles.
