First Edition in English (1st Italian eds., 1965-66). xxi, 1 leaf, 176 pp. Near Fine, in original wrappers (not published in cloth). Uncommon. 'Garin's book is probably the most unified and incisive treatment of Italian humanism yet produced' (Encyclopædia Britannica). 'One of the greatest of the many great Renaissance scholars who came to maturity in the 1930s' (Anthony Grafton & Nancy G. Siraisi, 'Introduction,' Natural Particulars: Nature and the Disciplines in Renaissance Europe, 1999, p. 14). 'The many publications of Eugenio Garin have previously been all too little known to historians of medieval and early modern science. There are essentially two reasons for this: (1) few of his writings have hitherto been translated from Italian, and few historians of science bother to read material in that language; (2) most of his publications have appeared in journals not normally read by historians of science. Particularly valuable are Garin's studies on the relation of science to magic in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance and his penetrating analyses of the intellectual ambiente from which early modern science grew. . a collection of several of his most characteristic essays has now appeared in English translation [offered here]' (Charles B. Schmitt, 'A Garin Compendium', review of Bibliografia degli scritti di Eugenio Gari; L'eta nuova: ricerche di storia della cultura dal XII al XVI secolo; Dal Rinascimento all'illuminismo: studi e ricerche; Science and Civic Life in the Italian Renaissance, Isis, Vol. 63, No. 3, Sept. 1972, pp. 419-422). I find it interesting that Stanford professor and historian of science Paula Findlen recently listed 'The Ideal City' (pp. 21-48) as just one of two sources on the syllabus for her course Science, Technology and Art: The Worlds of Leonardo under the subtopic 'The Science of Power.' 'The changing face of the ideal city is perhaps best elucidated by Eugenio Garin's opinion that 'the perfect city, the arch-city, in its buildings as well as in its institutions, does not exist outside this world, in heaven or in the land of Utopia. It is located on earth, even though it is not yet fully finished (31)' (Fred Luminoso, 'The Ideal City: Then and Now' -- written for the same course taught by Findlen, but a section taught by Michael John Gorman; on Gorman's Stanford page).
