[DE LA FEUILLE (Daniel)]. Science Hiéroglyphique, The Hague, Jean Swart, 1746. In-4°, half-leather bound. A Masterpiece of the emblem book followed by a series of historical and biographical emblems on Mary II of England. A fascinating collection of esoteric pictures in a small quarto size (20 x 16 cm) illustrated with 45 plates, which are 36 plates showing 15 medallions, and 9 plates decorated with 4 medallions each. In the first part, the thumbnails are in the form of medallions adorned with allegorical figures and occult. Each emblem is accompanied by a definition that begins with a quatrain verse. Then the author gives a detailed description of the figure explaining the symbolic significance of each of its attributes, providing a real initiatory treatise on the universe of symbols. The second part illustrated with emblems the life and death of Mary II Queen of England of Glorious Memory (from page 117 to page 128). Our copy is bound in half leather with rising spines and gilt on the back, t., 1 f. (Warn.), 128 pp., 45 pl., 4 ff. (Tables). Binding id slightly rubbed, corners bumped, three small pieces of leather lacking on hinges, lack of paper in corner p.57 (without damage to the text, probably original), tear without loss to a leaf of the table, good condition for a collection that remains uncommon. The book comes from the library of Beauharnais dynasty, attested by a magnificent engraved bookplate by Norbert Heÿbrouck (1700-1762), writer of his majesty, on reverse side of front cover. Daniel La Feuille (1640-1709) was born in Sedan and learned how to be a watchmaker. In 1683, De La Feuille and his family went to settle in Amsterdam to escape the repression against the Huguenots. He then worked as a writer and seller of prints and entered in 1691 in the guild of booksellers. His masterpiece (Currencies and emblems, 1691) dates from this time. The majority of symbols in this book had the shape and size of a watch which made them particularly useful for artisans and watchmakers. Praz and Landwehr established the origin of this profusion of symbols on the Idea de un politico Christiano by Saavedra Fajardo (1655) while Groult sees a kinship with the Iconology of Baudoin and Jacques de Bie (1643); the drafters of the Emblem Project Utrecht find some similarities with Alciat. (Landwehr, 440; Praz, 393). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1473195488371
