Inhaltsangabe: As a girl, Sally Ride loved sports but not school until a wonderful teacher introduced her to science. Her interest in science grows, leading to a Ph.D. in astrophysics, acceptance into the NASA training program for astronauts and finally, after passing rigorous tests, Sally becomes the first American woman in space.
About the Author: Mary Ellen Verheyden-Hilliard is the president of the Equity Institute, an independent, nonprofit educational organization. She has directed numerous educational projects including the first national program that brought training on Title IX and educational equity to educators in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Recognizing the documented need to encourage girls' interest in science and to provide role models at an early age, Verheyden-Hilliard developed and wrote the lively and true stories of the American Women in Science series. To help children make the connection between their lives and the lives of the 15 American scientists profiled in the series, the author emphasizes the girlhoods of the future scientists, showing how different girls overcame different barriers--for example of gender, race, language, disability, and poverty--to achieve successful careers in science, math and engineering. The biographies are in use in schools and libraries nationwide. Verheyden-Hilliard's work on equity themes has been supported by Federal, state, and local education agencies, colleges and universities, private organizations, and the Rockefeller Family Fund among others. Born and raised in Webster Groves, Missouri, she has lived in New York, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and now resides in Washington, D.C.
