A scrapbook kept by a member of the English landed gentry, Anne Duncan Martineau, the wife of Sir William Martineau of Kincraig 11th, in Scotland near the end of World War II. Her son, Roderick, had fought in the First World War and she kept a scrapbook of British goings-on in the Second World War as well as family events. Additionally her grandson Robin, Roderick's son, was fighting in Italy during World War II and stayed on through the post-war duties. Many of the clippings discuss the retreating German Army and the impending end of the war with headlines such as "Driving into Vienna," "Swift Russian Advance into Austria," and "Allies Thrusting Deep into Germany." This is followed by clippings about the German surrender and the celebrations of V-E (Victory in Europe) Day. The clippings include images showing men receiving medals of honor, visiting diplomats such as President Eisenhower, and German officials signing surrender documents. One section discusses the use of the atom bomb which includes a handwritten caption which reads, "first used against the Japs in early August 1945 and responsible to a great extent to bringing about the first defeat of the Japanese." Robin's camp in Italy is seen in these photos as well: he stayed on through 1947. After the war ephemera Anne details Royal family events, the general election of 1945, and Martinea's personal family letters and photographs through 1949. William follows the Queen and princesses on a trip to South Africa in 1947 with magazine clippings from a garden party and the royal's meeting school children. Also featured in this section is Princess Elizabeth's birthday celebration, engagement, and eventually articles about the Royal Wedding and honeymoon. Martineau family events are scattered throughout the album. Robin is seen attending the New Forest Beagles Hunt Ball, Martineau wedding announcements are posted throughout, and photographs show visits to Kincraig as well as boating outings with "Robin at the helm." Some pages include handwritten itineraries and short diary style entries for various years and events. An extensive collection of ephemera detailing the end of World War II and post-war British events from the perspective of an upper middle class family. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 431303
