Large 8vo, blue cloth, black lettering and blackstamp triple ruled border to front cover, original cloth but old spine renewal. An exposé of the British shipowners and shipbuilding industry's negligence that lead the to inordinate incidences of shipping disasters and unnecessary loss of life. The arguments and remedy put forward by Plimsoll sparked great public debate and lead to the Merchant Shipping Act of 1873. Spine darkened, some wear to edges, bumping to extremities, fraying to spine ends, ex-library with all accompanying inkstamps to ffpd, title page and verso of plates, "Norwich Free Library" bookplate to front free paste-down, foxing to preliminaries, corrections slip tipped in, ow holding together very well, vg. 225.00.
