Beschreibung

BIRCH, Thomas Ledlie. Seemingly Experimental Religion, Instructors Un-Experienced -- Converters Unconverted -- Revivals Killing Religion -- Missionaries in Need of Teaching -- or, War Against the Gospel by its Friends. Washington, PA: Printed for the Author, 1806. 144pp. Disbound. Some tears and staining to pages, but a very good copy. This rare publication documents an important episode in the history of the American Presbyterian Church. Thomas Ledlie Birch came to America from Ireland in 1798. He moved to Washington, in wester Pennsylvania in 1800 and requested membership in the Presbytery of Ohio, which was denied. He came into conflict with John McMillan, the most powerful figure in the regional Presbyterian Church. Birch was accused of holding unorthodox beliefs and of drunkenness. He, in turn, accused McMillan of lying, and eventually filed suit against McMillan (and others) for slander. The court found for Birch, but an appeal to the Supreme Court reversed the verdict. Birch wrote SEEMINGLY. while this drama was unfolding. It provides his account of Birch's hearings before the Presbytery of Ohio and the trials of McMillan. Birch argues that "Civil Liberty must be the forerunner of Religious Reformation. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 36615
