Stothard, R.A. With Life of the Author Bunyan by the George Cheever and an introductory essay to The Pilgrim's Progress by James Montgomery. The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan and published in February, 1678. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. John Bunyan (1628 - 1688) was an English Christian writer and preacher, who is well known for his book The Pilgrim's Progress. Though he became a non-conformist and member of an independent congregation, and although he has been described both as a Baptist and as a Congregationalist, he himself preferred to be described simply as a Christian. (4to) Very good, no dust jacket. 775pp. A hefty tome in full brown leather with bevelled edges, decorative gilt borders and spine sections, and design in blind in the center of the front and back covers. All edges gilt, coated yellow endpapers, portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, printed on double-column and with page borders, 100 drawings on wood and 20 drawings in chromo-lithography. The covers are a bit scuffed, the inner hinges cracked, and a handsome gift inscription dated Xmas 1866. The book is solid and internally clean. Contributors include George Cheever, James Montgomery.
