Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: The Seven Arts Publishing Co., Inc., 1917. The April, 1917, issue. Pages 553-680 of its volume (the volume half-year ended in April). Octavo, wraps. The scarce April supplement, "American Independence and the War" (9 pp., see scan, uncredited, but probably Oppenheim) is here; notable not just for its scarcity but as well for the likelihood that it was issued as an oblique - or maybe not so oblique - part of the Art-vs-Politics infighting within the Seven Arts staff and regulars. Very Good, some fading; some curling and wear to covers, small chips at top and bottom of spine. Textblock clean, sharp and still well-bound. See scans. Seichi Naruse is featured in this April 1917 issue of this singular journal. His piece on "Young Japan", viewed with the after-knowledge of World War II on the part of the reader, is intensely fascinating. Also here are absorbing contributions by Louis Untermeyer, Randolph Bourne, Van Wyck Brooks, John Butler Yeats, Waldo Frank, Amy Lowell, and of course others. The Seven Arts was an entity that should have survived, but, due to its wartime clash of artistic and political ideals, didn't. There has been no other periodical like it. Lpr2.
