The second of Malinowski three major works on the Trobriand island culture. This classic study of sexual customs and activities in a primitive society was written by one of the world's foremost ethnologists. In its investigation of the sex lives of the men and women of the Trobriand Islands, its deals with prenuptial intercourse, marriage, divorce, pregnancy, erotic psychology, ritual, morals, and manners. But its significance is universal. There are fascinating and detailed descriptions of Trobriand cosmology, reincarnation beliefs (spirit babies waiting to be born) and views of other cultures. As Havelock Ellis points out, "In the picture Dr. Malinowski presents, we become aware not only of a unique contribution to anthropological research, but of suggestions bearing on civilized life and its efforts towards social reform.
