Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, edited with a life of Shakespeare, an account of the theatre in his time, and numerous aids to the study of the play by Samuel Thurber, Jr. (Boston: Allyn and Bacon, The Academy Classics; Norwood Press, copyright 1919; printing undated, with code 'FTN' on the copyright page). Dark blue cloth, front board lettered in gilt within a ruled panel. From the Oyster Bay library of Frances Webb Roosevelt (Mrs. Quentin Roosevelt), and apparently her schoolbook from before her marriage: the front free endpaper is inscribed in pencil 'Frances Webb' and 'Sophomore Class', and the front free endpaper and pastedown carry five pencil sketches of young women's heads with the waved and bobbed hairstyles of the 1930s. The sketches are presumably by her, as they are in the same pencil on the same leaves. Frances Blanche Webb (1917-1995) of Kansas City studied art in her home city and graduated from Smith College. In 1944, while serving with the American Red Cross Clubmobiles in England, she married Capt. Quentin Roosevelt II, grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. She later became a well-known portrait painter in Oyster Bay, taught art at C. W. Post College, and worked as a courtroom sketch artist for newspapers, including at the Alger Hiss trial. She was the mother of Susan Roosevelt Weld and the archaeologist Anna C. Roosevelt. This schoolroom copy dates from before her marriage, and its sketches may be among her earliest drawings. Whether 'Sophomore Class' refers to high school or college is not known. Condition: Good. Cloth worn, rubbed and spotted, with small light abrasions to the front board and rubbed corners; gilt dulled but legible; endpapers lightly toned. No dust jacket, as issued. Other books from Frances Webb Roosevelt's library are offered separately. Please see photographs. Ships within 2 business days from Massachusetts, carefully packed.…
