70, [1] pp., 8vo, quarter black parchment, silver-printed sides with a "VA" initials pattern, top edge silver gilt, others untrimmed, silver-printed endpapers; black paper-covered slipcase with mounted silver-toned title label. No. 414 of 440 copies (of a total edition of 475) printed in black and blue on thick Arches vellum paper. An elegant production designed by Monroe Wheeler, who later became extensively involved in the exhibitions and publications programs of the Museum of Modern Art and was also a trustee, The first publication of Harrison of Paris, established by Barbara Harrison that published deluxe editions "using superior typography, paper, and the work of renowned illustrators" (Ellenzweig, Georg Platt Lynes: The Daring Eye, 108, quoting Rosco, Glenway Wescott Personally, 52). Harrison was a wealthy heiress and expatriate in Paris whose fortune derived from the Crocker family interests in banking and railroads. Both the book and slipcase are fine and well-preserved.
