This highly-regarded American historian (nicknamed the "Father of American History") served in James K. Polk's cabinet as Secretary of the Navy (1845-46) and as U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom (1846-49). Bold old age signature of the blank verso of Bancroft's 3¼" X 2" engraved Washington, DC calling card ("Mr. Bancroft. / 1623 H Street"), n.y. Near fine. With original envelope cancelled in Newport, Rhode Island where Bancroft summered) on 17 August 1888.
