_____Small quarto promotional for this town straddling Scott and New Madrid counties in southeastern Missouri. _____ Undaed, but "last year" was 1910 (p.4). _____ Historically the Sikeston area was apparently swamp land._____ In 1890 the first "dredge ditcher" arrived and began to drain selected land holdings. _____ In the 1900s the state legislature passed a law mandating that property owners had to agree to allow a drainage ditch to cross their lands. _____ The result, at least according to this, was the exposure of tremendously fertile land as the swamp was drained away. _____ Mind you there is still plenty of water in the neighborhood ._____"There is a great underground sheet of water or a subterranean river . ten or twelve feet underneath the surface of the ground.". _____ Illustrated with black & white photos of farms, businesses and residences. _____ The last four pages are ads for local businesses. _____ The binding staples are rusted and the covers are free from the contents. _____ The covers have been spine taped. _____ Not in WorldCat (11/22)._____.
