This is the world of Washington, D.C., where marble buildings, important seals, and serious suits do their best to hide the fact that everyone is just frantically trying not to get ruined by their last bad decision. At the centre of it all is a long buried case that absolutely refuses to stay buried. A man on death row. A decades old crime. A file that someone should have shredded but, mercifully for the plot, did not. A young lawyer gets hold of it and discovers that the justice system has been running on a rather creative definition of justice. Cue political pressure, threats, mysterious accidents, and the dawning realisation that telling the truth might be the most dangerous move on the board. Baldacci cheerfully drags you through courtrooms, back rooms and government corridors where everyone speaks in careful sentences and means roughly half of what they say. There are idealists trying not to be crushed, cynics trying not to feel anything, and powerful people who are mainly trying to avoid their names appearing in the wrong documents. The pace is brisk, the secrets are ugly, and the phrase national interest gets used in that special way that means somebody is definitely lying.
