When cop-turned-attorney John Fiske comes to Washington to investigate his brother's murder, he unearths decades-old secrets and discovers the truth is anything but simple in this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller.
It's never what it seems...
Young attorney Michael Fiske broke the law when he took Rufus Harms's prison letter from the Supreme Court. But he also sealed his own fate. Suddenly everyone who has anything to do with Harms or his appeal mysteriously dies. Now Michael's brother John, a cop turned attorney, comes to Washington to find out why his brother was murdered--and what it had to do with a crime that Harms committed twenty-five years before. But the one man who can help John, the one man who knows what really happened more than two decades ago--and why--has escaped from prison and is running for his life.

Paperback. Zustand: Used. The Simple Truth (1988) by David Baldacci (Warner Books) ISBN: 0446607711 Condition: Used (legally battered, procedurally sound) as sold by Crappy Old Books The Simple Truth is a legal thriller about how nothing connected to the law is ever simple, and truth turns out to be more of a negotiation than a destination. This is the world of Washington, D.C., where marble buildings, important seals, and serious suits do their best to hide the fact that everyone is just frantically trying not to get ruined by their last bad decision. At the centre of it all is a long buried case that absolutely refuses to stay buried. A man on death row. A decades old crime. A file that someone should have shredded but, mercifully for the plot, did not. A young lawyer gets hold of it and discovers that the justice system has been running on a rather creative definition of justice. Cue political pressure, threats, mysterious accidents, and the dawning realisation that telling the truth might be the most dangerous move on the board. Baldacci cheerfully drags you through courtrooms, back rooms and government corridors where everyone speaks in careful sentences and means roughly half of what they say. There are idealists trying not to be crushed, cynics trying not to feel anything, and powerful people who are mainly trying to avoid their names appearing in the wrong documents. The pace is brisk, the secrets are ugly, and the phrase national interest gets used in that special way that means somebody is definitely lying. Your particular copy has reached you via Crappy Old Books, a noble establishment where paperbacks acquire the sort of lived in look that first editions can only dream of. You should expect A cover with light scuffing and perhaps a faint crease or two, as though it has spent time being read on public transport by someone practicing their own poker face. A spine with honest reading lines, proof that at least one previous reader kept turning pages long after they promised themselves they would stop at the end of the chapter. Corners that are gently softened, like the morals of a politician halfway through their second term. Inside, however, all the twists, revelations and carefully timed shocks are intact. The pages still contain every late night investigation, every uneasy conversation, every moment when a character realises the legal system has less to do with justice and more to do with who has the better filing system. The paper may have tanned a little with age, but the plot is still fully caffeinated. No key pages are missing, and no one has helpfully scribbled the killer or the twist in the margin. Buying The Simple Truth in Used condition from Crappy Old Books adds a nice little layer of irony. You are reading about documents that have been mishandled, hidden and passed around in secret, in a book that has clearly changed hands a few times and now lives its best second hand life. Somewhere in the background a fictional judge is insisting on the integrity of the system while your slightly scuffed copy quietly disagrees. Perfect for readers who Like their thrillers full of files, lies and last minute revelations Enjoy the strange comfort of knowing that in fiction, at least, the truth occasionally wins a round Prefer their legal drama with more tension than Latin, and more danger than footnotes Adopt this Used copy of The Simple Truth and give it a new place on your shelf. The outside may be a little worn, but the conspiracy, courtroom drama and uncomfortable honesty inside are still very much in working order. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL.
