An uncommon copy of this study of the political history of India, from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The second edition of this uncommon work in a half morocco library binding. A political history of India from the introduction of Sir Pitt's Bill in 1784 until 1811, by Major-General Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833), who was an East India Company administrator. He draws upon twenty-five years of experience of working and living in India, in a position which allowed him to ascertain a full political view of India.Library bookplate from the United Service Club to the front paste down. The United Service Club was a London gentlemen's club founded in 1815, the most prestigious of London's military clubs, for the use of senior officers in the British Army and Royal Navy. Ink inscription to the title page, stating "Presented by Rear Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm". This suggests that Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm (1768-1838) gave this book to the United Service Club's permanent library between 1813 and 1821, the period in which he served as Rear Admiral in the Hundred Days' War and guarded Napoleon Bonaparte on the island of Saint Helena. In a half morocco library binding. Title page has been tipped in. Externally fairly smart, with rubbing to the joints, spine and extremities. Leather is split to the front joint.
