Griffiths, Elijah L., M.D. (1769-1847)

One of his 12 sketches is dated at base of the drawing, 1834, another with the number 31 at the base (1831?), one showing two children and a raised outhouse has a space where an image was removed measuring approximately 3 3/4" x 5". Dr. Griffiths served as a surgeon for General Anthony Wayne in the campaign against the Indians, later he carried on correspondence with Thomas Jefferson from just before his Presidency in 1800 to early 1820. Besides his work in 1804 on eye disease, he served as the Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Society for Discouraging the Use of Ardent Spirits. Alcohol abuse had been endemic in early 19th Century America. Sully's painting of Dr. Elijah Griffiths was followed by a bust of the doctor which was underwritten by 30 subscribers. He retired from his practice in 1834 which is one of the dates in one of the drawings. Another sketch book has the name of his wife Anna Elijah Griffiths with 8 sketches and is dated on the front cover at 1846. His sketchbook is dated 1845 and he died in 1847. With the two sketchbooks are nine pages of detailed text on the way to mix specific colors in great detail which is in his hand.
