This solution manual is designed for the instructors and may prove challenging to students. The intent was to help reduce the laborious algebra and to provide instructors with a way of checking solutions. It has been made available to students because it is next to impossible to maintain security of the manual even by large publishing companies. There are websites dedicated to obtaining a solution manuals for any course for a price. The students can use the manual as additional examples, a practice followed in many first year courses. Most large textbooks publishers advertise by sending complimentary copies of textbooks and solution manuals to instructors. The cost of this advertisement is borne by the students, the only paying customer in this business model. The cost of textbooks has been rising 3-4 times faster than inflation. [http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/01/why-are-college-textbooks-so-absurdly-expensive/266801/]. Students pay enough tuition to universities who can and should buy the book and other instructional material from their endowment revenues on behalf of the instructor. I hope faculty considering using my books in their courses will support my effort to keep the book cost low for the students by not providing complimentary copies. The growth of new disciplines such as plastic and biomedical engineering has increased emphasis of incorporating non-linear material behavior in engineering design and analysis. Incorporating material non-homogeneity is also growing with increased usage of metal matrix composites, polymer composites, reinforced concrete, and wooden beams stiffened with steel strips and other laminated structures. Residual stresses to increase load carrying capacity of metals, unsymmetric bending, shear center, beam and shaft vibrations, beams on elastic foundations, Timoshenko beams, are all complexities that are acquiring greater significance in engineering. In Intermediate Mechanics of Materials, the author shows the modularity of the logic, shown on the front of the book. The repetitive use of this logic demonstrates the ease with which the aforementioned complexities can be incorporated into the simple theories of the first course and used for design and analysis of simple structures. For additional details visit madhuvable.org
