Beschreibung
5 1/2 in. x 8 3/4 in., handwritten poem on a sheet of thin, watermarked paper. Shows a central, horizontal fold, some tanning, wear to the paper. A Sonnet dedicated to Paul Lemperly (1858-1939) that refers to Lizzie Hexam, from Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend" (1865). Other poems by F. A. Hilliard were published in "Vanities in Verse", Marion Press, 1897, which Paul Lemperly helped publish. Both men were book collectors, and early, founding members of the Rowfant Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Lemperly has added in pencil on the back of the sheet: April 26, 1909. Contents: "To P.L. Sonnet I called upon the Gods to show to me,/ The image of the maid they loved the best/ In all the world of Fiction. My request/ Was scarcely uttered ere the Mighty Three,/ Bowed each to each-as when the Gods agree-/ And one, the elder, chose from all the rest/ One crystal ball to which his lips he pressed-/ Then held it up that I might plainly see./ And lo! within a room gaunt, timered, bare,/ Before a brazier fire I saw a maid/ Hands clasping knees, her fancies all a play./ And as she read the 'hollow by the flare',/ I saw her soul, so white I was afraid-/ 'Twas Lizzie, waiting for the Bird of Prey. F.A.H." [Francis Adon Hilliard]. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-5937845804
