Beschreibung
Three volume edition of Sophocles tragedies as edited by Richard Francis Philip Brunck. Brunck was an enthusiastic scholar of Greek who edited this set of works including Oedipus Rex and Electra. An interesting set, these have both Latin and Greek versions as interpreted though Brunck. There is commentary from a variety of eras. Volume one has a lectori or brief overview of Brunck in Latin with the text within in Greek. In this volume, there are blank pages to allow for translation or notes between the pages of text with quite a few notes both as marginalia and on the blank pages. Volume two has both Latin and Greek versions of the contents and no marginalia as well as none of the bound in blank pages like volume one. Volume three resembles volume one with blank pages for translation and notes with notes on the Greek text in Latin. Inside all three volumes are the bookplates of William Park Dickins who also wrote an inscription dated 1839 in each volume in Latin. Dickins was a graduate of Winchester College who later served as a fellow of Merton College and barrister at Lincoln s Inn. Good Condition: 8vo: three volumes: full leather with gilt decoration on spine: all volumes have some loss to the spine with chipped labels and volume two having a piece from the head missing: rub to the boards and some small peels: edge wear and bent corners: bookplate inside all three volumes: inscription on ffep in all three volumes: marginalia and notes throughout: Sophocles Tragoediae September; cum Scholiis Veteribus, Versione Latina et Notis.
