Inhaltsangabe: Bathya, the seductive woman of the Song of Solomon, is depicted as a foreigner in the court. She is an outsider, almost alienated from the Israelite women who form a sort of ?chorus? throughout. There are subtle allusions to her being a prostitute and clear accusations she is an idolater. She is, it seems, a Nubian Egyptian, indoctrinated into the cult of the Divine Adoratrice. This cult was politically powerful, highly sexually orientated, and hereditary ? all key factors in the Song. Bathya knows she has caught the eye of the king and we learn later that this has been her plan from the start. The two become lovers and with every day Solomon becomes addicted to her charms, to the point of madness. Her incantations and potions, her creation of a gris-gris (a collection of items to magically represent the king), and some assistance from her mother, spin a web that captures the king. At one point Solomon attempts to break free. He is near insanity, violent, angry. Bathya momentarily feels she is losing her control. She realizes she does love the king but her desire to become Number One Wife and bear the heir to the kingdom pushes her to extremes. Eventually, she does get her way. Bathya has a daughter ? the entire cycle is destined to repeat itself within the court of Israel. The Song was written as a warning to future Israelite kings, for if the wisest Solomon could fall foul, all others must steel themselves against the dark and mysterious powers of the ambitious female! Only now, of course, can we really appreciate the strength and ingenuity of the woman who used sorcery and sexuality to rise from the lowly rank of ?tent-follower? to that of queen.

Inhaltsangabe: J. Tyson, MA argues that The Song of Solomon is replete with references to ancient earth magick and sexual sorcery. The primary figure, the woman of the Song, is a foreign seductress, depicted as the antagonist, putting King Solomon in jeopardy. Solomon was renowned for having multiple foreign women in his court and for loosening the Israelite laws to allow them freedom to worship their own deities. With hindsight, Tyson suggests, the post-Babylonian Israelites, who were keen to have foreigners ?put away? after years of inter-marriage, wrote the Song to preserve the caveat of Solomon?s experience. The Song was thus written to warn future leaders not to allow the guile of foreign women to jeopardize Israel itself. By today?s standards, however, the woman of the Song becomes a fascinating case study of feminine sorcery in a context of Egyptian-Israelite monarchy.
