B0045OOGO8 No date, but circa 1999 De Soto Historical Society (De Soto, Missouri), 8 3/4 x 11 3/8 inches tall black faux leather hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, pictorial endpapers, copiously illustrated with vintage black-and-white photographs, 127 pp. A couple of pages with very slight creasing. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a very good dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Scarce; OCLC (No. 28958983) locates only eight copies at institutions worldwide, six in Missouri, one in Ohio and one in Wisconsin. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~SP36~ De Soto is a city in Jefferson County, in the southeastern part of Missouri, approximately 45 miles south of St. Louis. The town was organized in 1857 and is named for the explorer Hernando De Soto, who claimed the Louisiana Territory for Spain. Contents: The Birth of a City (Introduction); Ribbons of Steel; Business, Banks and Industry; Home and Hearth; Places of Worship; Education for All; Friends and Neighbors; Legends and Lore; Future of the Past (Conclusion); Acknowledgements.
