Beschreibung
[nice clean copy, faint handling wear, soft diagonal crease in rear cover]. A play in two acts, set in a generic "Latin-American country," that's a drame à clef inspired by the rise to power of Eva and Juan Peron in Argentina. The plot involves an social-climbing radio soap-opera actress who uses her relationship with a young Army colonel to make her way into high society; after the colonel stages a coup and becomes the country's president, she marries him and becomes the First Lady. She gradually accrues more and more power to herself, while cultivating her adoring public. Under its original title of "Diamond Orchid," the play had a blip of a run on Broadway (5 peformances) in February 1965; the New York Times review is sprinkled with words such as "ponderous," "lifeless," and "embarrassing." This reworked and retitled version was first staged in Dallas, Texas, by the University Theatre of SMU, "as a benefit for the Margo Jones Special Fund" in December 1965, with Nan Martin and Alexander Scourby in the leading roles. I wonder if the contemporary audiences were thinking "what this clunker needs is a few good songs"?. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 28572
