A very scarce collection of sixteen specifications relating to gas manufacturing in the Industrial Revolution, accompanied by a collection of detailed folding technical diagrams. Sixteen very scarce specifications for 1804-1818 patents, bound together and retaining their original front wrap. With each of these published by Eyre and Spottiswoode between 1856 and 1857, and with numerous folding plates of technical diagrams and plans, this is a fascinating account of the rapid early nineteenth century advancements in gas manufacture and storage.Published in 1856 are: the 1804 specification of Frederic Albert Winsor's 'Improved Method of Making Gas, Coke, &c.'; Edward Heard's 1806 specification for 'Improvements in Obtaining Inflammable Gas from Pit Coal, &c.'; the 1808 specification for Winsor's 'Improvements in Making Gas, Coke, &c.'; the 1808 patent for Winsor's Improved Oven, &c. for Making Coke, Charcoal, Gas &c.'; the 1809 specification of Winsor's 'Improvements in Making Gas, &c.'; John Maiben's 1810 specification on 'Improvements in Gas for Lamps, &c.', with a folding illustrated plate; John Taylor's 1815 specification of a 'Mode for Producing Gas', with a folding illustrated plate; Samuel Clegg's 1815 specification for 'Improved Gas Apparatus', with four folding plates; Daniel Wilson's 1817 specification for 'Improved Gas-light Apparatus', with a folding plate, and Richard Farmer Brain's 1817 specification for 'Improvements in the Manufacture of Gas', with one plate.Published in 1857 are: Reuben Phillips the Younger's 1817 specification for an 'Improved Method of Purifying Gas', with a folding plate; John Perks' 1817 specification for 'Manufacturing, Purifying and Storing Gas', with five folding plates; William Stratton's 1817 specification for 'Improved Gasometer', with one plate; Arthur Howe Holdsworth's 1817 specification for 'Improvements in Gasometers', with one folding plate; George Holworthy Palmer's 1818 specification for a 'Mode of Purifying Gas', and finally Clegg's 1818 specification for 'Improved Gasometer or Gasholder', with one folding plate.With the bookplate of the Manchester Public Library to the front pastedown, and numerous blind stamps of this library throughout.This collection of sixteen specifications provide a fascinating insight into the rapid advancements in gas manufacturing patenting taking place during England's Industrial Revolution. Externally, exceptionally smart, with minor shelf wear to back strip head and tail. Library bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned and marked to perimeters, with small losses to perimeters of front wraps of three specifications. One folding plate detached. Numerous blind library stamps throughout. Very Good.
