Text in English, translated by Thomas Nugent from the 1748 French first edition "De l'Esprit des Lois." Book IX on pages 183-192 has content on the nature of a confederate republic. "This form of government is a convention by which several small states agree to become members of a larger one which they intend to form. It is a kind of assemblage of societies, that constitute a new one, capable of increasing by means of new associations, till they arrive to such a degree of power, as to be able to provide for the security of the whole united body." - pp. 183-184. "It is difficult for the united states, to be all of an equal bigness and power. The Lycian republic was an association of twenty three towns; the large ones had three votes in the common council, the middling ones two, the small towns one. The Dutch republic consists of seven, great or small, provinces, that have each one voice." - page 186. Content on slavery on pages 336-357 "Book XV. In what manner the Laws of civil Slavery are relative to the Nature of the Climate": Of civil Slavery; Origin of the Right of Slavery among the Roman Civilians; Another Origin of the Right of Slavery; Another Origin of the Right of Slavery; Of the Slavery of the Negroes; True Origin of the Right of Slavery; Another Origin of the Right of Slavery; Inutility of Slavery among us; Several Kinds of Slavery; Regulations necessary in respect to Slavery; Abuses of Slavery; Danger from the Multitude of Slaves; Of armed Slaves; The same subject continued; Precautions to be used in moderate Governments; Regulations between Masters and Slaves; Of Infranchisements; Of Freedmen and Eunuchs. The Index in this volume is to both Volumes One and Two.
