Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338. From the Theatrum Civitatum et admirandorum Italiae, published in Amsterdam in 1663. In his long lasting working life, Johannes Blaeu published three books on Italian cities. In 1663 he published the volumes divided as follows: Papal State, Rome and the Reign of Naples. After his death, in 1682, his heirs published two more volumes, about the cities of Piedmont and Savoy, reissued afterwards in 1693 and 1697 by other publishers. The French publisher Pierre Mortier reissued some plates in 1704/5, with the title of Nouveau Theatre de l Italie. The collection is made of four volumes, which include Blaeu s plates, though slightly changed and modified; with them, there are also many new maps drawn by Mortier himslef, depicting the cities of Northern Italy, published in the first volume. Mortier s atlas was published with Latin, French and Dutch text. The main difference between Blaeu s and Mortier s atlases is that the text is not on verso on every single map (which is then completely white), but is right at the beginning of each volume. The great success of this work bred a new edition, nearly identical, edited by R. Alberts and published in 1724/5. The works deriving from Blaeu s first edition, 1663, are characterized by the text on verso and are quite rare. Copper engraving, in excellent condition. Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338. 536 440mm.
