Beschreibung
A scarce humourist publication from the nineteenth century. This poem, Steamers v Stages or Andrew and His Spouse is attributed to 'The Author of York and Lancaster', better known as English poet Thomas Hood. Hood is mentioned to the preface as 'the reigning punster'. Hood wrote regularly for The London Magazine, the Athenaeum and Punch. He was known for writing humorously on many contemporary issues. In a James Condie of Paisley binding, binder's label to rear pastedown. With publisher's advertisements to rear. Illustrated throughout with six humorous engravings by Robert Cruikshank. Cruikshank was a caricaturist, illustrator and portrait miniaturist. Brother of the famous George Cruikshank, Robert was the lesser known of the two. However, Robert illustrated a number of notable books often sequels to previous successes he and his brother had contributed. From the library of Alexander Speirs esq of Elderslie, as stated from his bookplate to the front pastedown. Speirs was a Scottish politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1841. He was also Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire for the seven years prior to his death. In a half straight grained morocco binding with paper covered boards by James Condie of Paisley. Binder's label to rear pastedown. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Head and tail of spine is also particularly rubbed with small loss to head of spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Alexander Speirs of Elderslie. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Very Good.
