Inhaltsangabe: "Stephen Hawking Smoked My Socks is a brave and beautiful work, in the tradition of Paton's Cry the Beloved Country or Biko's I Write What I like. This is South African intelligentsia once again aligning world opinion with a very reasonable version of Truth."
-- Ian Campbell-Gillies

Basically, I remained fascinated with your thesis from page one to the end of Stephen hawking Smoked My Socks. I expect you and I might well have different perspectives on some specific points - which two people wouldn't? - but the whole notion of faith as you discuss it is, in my view, completely true... Now though I've read the book and, as a practicing Christian, simply cannot see what all the fuss was about. I hope your valid comments re religions and religious faith/belief will not be allowed to detract from the very real accurate message you're conveying re science. In my view (and I may be quoted on this) you've very carefully and accurately exposed possibly the biggest flaw in modern science - a flaw which extends well beyond the bounds of astrophysics and, indeed, physics!
-- theoretical physicist Dr Jeremy Dunning-Davies, University of Wales, Cardiff.

Socks is filled with lavish helpings of ideas and food for thought.  This is the only book that I have ever read where, after finishing, I immediately started to reread it.  It is a feast.  Ratcliffe's book brings to fruition decades of study of the human lot as exemplified by the manner in which scientists make progress in the face of stultifying beliefs that slow progress because of our innate need to follow the leader.  It is a beautifully constructed symphony of words that mixes poetic sentences with profound insights contrasting the nature of science and belief.
- Dr Gerrit Verschuur, professor of astronomy, University of Memphis

From the Author: I simply could not understand why there was such an intense and dogmatic insistence upon the prior conversion of undergraduate physicists to what was after all just a philosophical model. The way we were to practice our craft was to a large extent determined and constrained by the compulsory assumption of a particular philosophical world-view. It was the Big Bang way or the highway. Full conversion to the faith was the only realistic path to a degree in space science.

This I found repugnant. With my tail bushed out and my ears flattened, I began a campaign of resistance that was to last forty years. The defining moment in my quest for enlightenment in this frustrating maelstrom came in conversation with the late Professor Geoffrey Burbidge. "Hilton," he said to me a few months before he died, "the problem is really this: The administrators of education in space science will be extremely loath to abandon the Big Bang Theory, because if they do it will amount to an explicit admission that they actually know far less than they have led us all to believe. That's the problem. Their pride will simply not allow it."

Well, that was it. I was determined to get to the bottom of this iniquitous state of affairs, even if that meant taking a diversion from hard physics and immersing myself in the heady, turbulent, often opaque ocean of the humanities. I must say, I'm so glad I did. The ultimate result of my detour is this book, a presentation of my thesis on the sociological, political, and behavioural roots of opinions, convictions, dogma, and bias in physical science. The phenomenon is pervasive, and affects everyone who has an opinion, so my quest has been generalised to take in a broad range of scientific and socio-political disciplines. I contend that everyone, without exception, is powerfully affected by personal belief, so I suppose I have at last produced a book that is relevant to 7 billion people.

I owe my late father a huge debt of gratitude for impressing upon me the value of what I would in later years call reality physics. He spoke to me about physics and mechanics, cause and effect, from the time I was first able to hold memories in my mind's eye. The way he put this philosophy to me seemed so simple that it appeared to be patently naive, yet it would take me until well into my adult years before I ultimately grasped the meaning of these idioms.
· No hocus-pocus.
· Beware the man with a theory.
· Never negotiate with a suicide bomber.
· For every effect, there's a cause, and for every action, a reaction.

Whatever the truth of the matter, and no matter our belief system, we are all children of the Universe, given to contemplation and abstract thought. Let's take that levelling notion along with us as we explore the sanctity of belief. Hopefully, we'll come out the other side of this book less confused than when we went in.

Stephen Hawking Smoked My Socks is a prism-free lens with which forgotten basic skills in objectivity are seen again, and the innate art of existence is set free from the dictates of fear and power. - Ian Campbell-Gillies Why did Stephen Hawking become so famous? What exactly brought world renown to Albert Einstein? Why are those particular individuals household names across the globe whilst other achievers are not; why have they become icons to rival film stars; and why they are adored and protected by a fiercely loyal fan base? In Stephen Hawking Smoked My Socks, Hilton Ratcliffe seeks out the answers to those questions, and discovers that they have nothing at all to do with science.
