Might be a first edition (MDCCCLXXXIII on the title page, NAP). No data on the copyright page, so it might not be. But rare novel. Very decent condition for book published in 1883. Take a look at the pictures of the covers. There is a thin white spot off the front top edge. There is a little rub-through at the spine ends. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are in good shape, superficial rubbing at the bottom ones. The corners have only small spots of rubbing. The book is quite solidly bound. There is one tiny tear just off the top edge of the juncture between the front inside cover and front end paper, minor. No other issues there, no issues with the rear cover. The pages are nicely tight. They are, in the main, very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any stains. I saw only a few pages with the lightest bit of foxing. There's also a light bit of foxing on the two pages of advertisements at the end of the book, and a bit on the few pages before them, very light. That's it. The pages are, as you would expect, toned, but uniformly. I'm not seeing much by way of creasing, no placeholder creases, a little crinkling here and there, nothing significant. I saw only two tiny edge tears, one off the bottom edge of the title page, looks like 1/8th or 1/4 inch, very thin, far from the print. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. It looks like there was/is a lightly penciled name on the blank front end paper. Someone may have partially erased it.
