Black Morocco title plate on spine with gilt lettering. Tight binding and solid boards. Moderate shelf wear. Slight bumping, wrinkling to corners. Minor scuffing to board edges. Rubbing to boards and spine. Discoloration to parts of boards, majority of spine. No loss to cover. Title plate remains present and in tact. Scattered markings to inside front board. Remnants of a personal library bookplate. Copper plate engraved, illustrated title page prior to standard title page. Title page and following leaf contain small stamps in lower right indicating ownership by the "Theological Seminary in Gettysburg". Frontispiece engraved portrait of Benedetto Varchi. Aside from minimal library markings, pages are clean and unmarked, with only slight lean to text block. Minor staining on pages adjacent to chapter beginnings and illustration plates. Pages become darker towards center of volume. Minimal chipping to edges. Overall, condition is very good.Benedetto Varchi was an Italian humanist, historian and poet. Born in Florence to a family that had originated at Montevarchi, he frequented the neoplatonic academy that Bernardo Rucellai organized in his garden, the Orti Oricellari. There, in spite of the fact that Rucellai was married to the elder sister of Lorenzo de Medici, republican ideals circulated, in the context of revived classical culture, that culminated in a plot in 1513 to subvert Medici rule in Florence. During this time, Varchi studied in Pisa to become a notary. With his return to Florence, he fought in defense of the temporarily revived Republic of Florence, during the siege by the Mediceans and imperialists in 1530, and was exiled after the surrender of the city. In 1536 he took part in Strozzi's unsuccessful expedition against Medicean rule, but seven years later Varchi was called back to Florence by Cosimo I who who gave him a pension and commissioned him to write a history of the city. His 16 volume Storia Fiorentina (collected here in one book) covers the period from 1527 to 1538, though it was so frank it was not published in Florence until 1721. This gorgeous volume compiles Varchis greatest work in one detailed volume, complete with illustrations and liner notes.
