#2257 - "Storm in The West" by Sinclair Lewis and Dore Schary. VG++/VG 1st ed. 1963. Is signed by both authors on title page. Written in 1943 as collaboration by Schary and Lewis, to be made into a movie, which was ultimately shelved. Schary's idea was to write an allegory about the attack on Poland by the Nazis in 939. He chose Sinclair Lewis because he had read Lewis' works extensively. Lewis knew the west and his political orientation was the same as Schary's. Schary wanted a western story that could be read as such, which would repeat the invasion of Poland in such a way that the person could read the story and not think of the Nazis, but see the evil that can multiply without opposition in any setting - a story Schary felt needed to be told and retold to prevent it occurirng again. Together they set out to write the story in such a manner that it would be the screenplay - that way the director (if and when it was produced) would know exactly what the writers had in mind. And yet a person reading it for entertainment would also have a clear concept of the plot and action. John Steinbeck tried this method some years later in one of his books. Therefore, all action is in the present tense and the verbal exchanges are like reading a script. The villain of the script is Hygatt (Hitler)and his henchmen are Gribbles (Goebbels) and Garrett (Goering). One of the most curious things about this script is that while written in 1943, it accurately predicted the way in which Hitler and Mussoleni later died. The art work - pictures of the main characters - are excellent. Hygatt (Hitler) has the same style of mustache which does not look out of place at all under a western hat. For those who have an avid interest in Hollywood in the earlier years, this is a great book. Schary's comments on Sinclair Lewis are excellent - a rarely seen side of the generally antagonistic writer. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 002257
