Beschreibung:

Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: 'This book is my personal story, from boyhood to battlefield and beyond, written in my own words, reflecting on my life.'- Peter Cosgrove, 2006General Peter Cosgrove leapt into the public consciousness when he headed the 9000-strong multinational INTERFET force sent into restore order in East Timor. Through his straightforward approach to a tense situation, General Cosgrove instilled confidence. In his rise to Chief of the Army and then, to the top job as Chief of the Defence Force, the General cemented a reputation as a modern day Australian hero, a strong leader - and an all-round good bloke.A SOLDIER'S LIFE, written by the man himself, is packed with humorous anecdotes which counter the more serious detail of the General's role in the military through to his retirement in July 2005. He writes colourfully of his early years and we follow him from raw recruit to Vietnam. The book also gives insights into major recent events: 9/11, the Tampa Crisis, the liberation of East Timor and Iraq. General Cosgrove is not a man who flinches from telling it how it was. It is this unique personal perspective that makes this book a bestseller - and the ultimate Christmas gift for 2006. Inhaltsangabe: When Cosgrove was growing up in the then working-class Sydney suburb of Paddington, people like him didn't become governor-general. Until 1965, when Lord De L'Isle retired, almost all who held the post were British aristocrats; among them three viscounts, two earls and a prince. They had butlers and chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royces. There's still a Roller in the Government House garage - a 1970 Phantom VI - but Cosgrove is conveyed to most of his appointments in a Holden Caprice, with the vice-regal flag fluttering from the bonnet. Cosgrove burst into the national consciousness in 1999, when he led a successful mission to restore peace to East Timor during its transition to independence from Indonesia. On television, he came across as a new kind of military man. Genial. Straight-talking. Easy to like. He was promoted to chief of army, then to head of the entire defence force, succeeding Chris Barrie, who describes him to me as "an uncomplicated sort of person ... a do-er, rather than a thinker". Barrie says: "He is not an intellect. You'll never have an intellectual conversation with Peter." But the retired admiral points out that Cosgrove has other gifts. "His emotional intelligence is acutely wired. His ability to get on with people in all walks of life is just terrific." Find out why Peter was voted one of the most admired leaders in distant and recent memory.

Buchbeschreibung Harper Collins, Sydney, 2006. Hard Cover. Buchzustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. In these highly anticipated memoirs, the former Australian of the Year will look back over his respected and decorated military career and his personal life with wit and warmth on top of the steel which made him one of Australia's most popular and widely recognised military leaders. When Cosgrove won the Military Cross in Vietnam, the citation listed his ''determination, initiative, courage and inspiration''. These qualities were evident throughout his subsequent career, as he rose steadily through the army hierarchy and quickly earned a reputation as one of his country's most respected soldiers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of his career came in 1999, when he was given command of a multinational force to restore peace and security in East Timor. Upon his return to Australia in 2000, he was appointed Chief of the Army and, in 2002, Chief of the Defence Force, a position he held until July 2005. BOOK DETAILS:The contents are clean, tight and sound throughout. The boards are clean and unmarked, with only minimal wear. The lettering on the spine is clear and bright. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and shows only minor shelf-wear. No age-toned pages or other evidence of ageing Only sign of previous ownership is a name written at the top of the f.f.e.p. "In 1999, General Peter Cosgrove was thrust into the full glare of the nation's spotlight following his appointment as Commander of the International Forces in East Timor.
