Hardback, Good, no dustjacket. Illustrated cream front board, bumped to corners, with a few marks and some age discolouration. Green cloth spine. Grey board to reverse, with a few marks. Binding strong. Some tanning to endpapers. 24pp., one-sided, each verso blank. Occasional slight dog-earing; small tear to base of p.2. Colour illustrations throughout. Contents clean and bright. Der Struwwelpeter is an 1845 German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehaviour in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Der Struwwelpeter is one of the earliest books for children that combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, and is considered a precursor to comic books. Der Struwwelpeter is known for introducing the character of the Tailor (or Scissorman) to Western literature. Decorative Hard Back. Zustand: Good. Decorative Title page +publisher page + 24 single sided pages with colour illustrations and black text. Binding Good, some edge/corner wear. Contents mostly very good, clean copy, one page with tear top & bottom, a few with minor handling/finger residue marks. Inside front is a gift dedication dated 1951. This was such a popular book, that Blackie published it for many years, with various covers, this cover seems to have been used from about 1900 to 1950s, so could have been made between these dates, but with a 1951 inscription, this copy most likely dates from the 1940's to 1951 as it was not unusual for publishers to print a thousand copies at a time and pile them up till being ordered by bookshops, and the ones near the bottom not sent out for many years, due to later copies put on top as they looked all the same.
