Like a Sunflower, I Turned to You: Until You Taught Me Where to Face

1: The First Bench Bond

Sanu and Miki were stitched together by the quiet chaos of school life. Same bench. Same lunch box swaps. Same punishments for whispering during math class. Sanu was the dreamer-eyes always somewhere beyond the blackboard. Miki was the anchor-sharp, observant, grounded like the roots of an old banyan tree. They didn’t become friends. They simply… always were.

In Class 9, under a dusty ceiling fan and the smell of chalk, they made a promise—
“No matter what, we won’t drift.” Miki carved it lightly into the wooden desk with a compass tip. Sanu laughed, but his heart believed it like scripture. Neither of them knew how time quietly erases even the deepest carvings.

Board exams ended like a chapter closing too fast. That final bell echoed louder than ever before. They stood at the gate. “Stay in touch,” Miki said casually. “Always,” Sanu replied, as if the word carried power. But life isn’t impressed by promises. It listens only to change.

College arrived like a storm of unfamiliar faces. That’s where Sanu met Pinki. She wasn’t loud, yet she filled every silence. She laughed like she trusted the world. She spoke like she had never been broken. Sanu didn’t notice when his thoughts began orbiting her. It didn’t feel like love. It felt like direction.

Pinki became his constant—library partner, tea companion, late-night caller.

“Why do you always listen so carefully?” she once asked. Sanu smiled. “Because you sound like something I don’t want to miss.” He didn’t realize then—he had already turned toward her like a sunflower chasing light.

Meanwhile, Miki faded into the background of his life like an old song he forgot to play. Messages became shorter. Calls became rare. Yet Miki never complained. Because some friendships don’t shout when they are breaking. They just… go silent.

One rainy evening, Pinki rested her head on Sanu’s shoulder. Not love. Not friendship. Something in between. Sanu didn’t confess. He feared naming it would destroy it. But feelings unnamed don’t disappear. They grow roots in silence.

The truth arrived gently, like a quiet betrayal. “I need to tell you something,” Pinki said. Her voice was steady. “I’m seeing someone… from my coaching days.” The world didn’t crash. It simply… stopped moving. Sanu smiled. “That's great.” But inside, something folded into itself—never to open the same way again.

Heartbreak doesn’t always make noise. Sometimes, it just makes you remember. Sanu called Miki after months. She picked up on the first ring. No anger. No questions. “Had your tea?” she asked. And just like that—he realized what he had lost wasn’t just love. It was someone who never needed explanation.

Sanu met Pinki one last time. “I think I was wrong,” he said softly. “I thought you were my destination.” Pinki smiled, a little sad, a little understanding. “And now?” “Now I know… you were my direction.” Some people don’t stay. They teach you where to look next.

Sanu sat with Miki under an old tree-just like school days, but quieter, wiser. “You never left,” he said. Miki shrugged.
“Some people don’t need reasons to stay.” For the first time, Sanu didn’t feel the need to chase light. He had learned something deeper: A sunflower doesn’t just follow the sun. It grows from where it stands. And sometimes… the strongest love is the one that never tried to shine too bright.

Pinki moved on. Miki stayed. Sanu grew. And somewhere between love and loss, he learned: You don’t always end up with the one you turned toward…But you always become someone because of them.
