Quarto. 150 leaves, unnumbered pages. Among the rarest of early Mesa yearbooks with over 400 signatures of a primarily LDS student body (also signed by 24 faculty members) , not only is this book signed by by Zedo Ishikawa (4 times), Mesa track and football player [signed on both team picture], who was killed in 1932 by an accidental shotgun blast when trying to stop two dogs from fighting. As he was dying, he told his teammates to "carry on" which became the team's slogan in future years. Later, the City of Mesa established Zedo Iskikawa Elementary School to honor his memory. He also signed on page 12. David "Star" Johnson, the only African-American player in both football and track (signed his name each time). He went on to become a Los Angeles police officer. In 1944 he was murdered by Leonce (Frenchy) Navarre a policeman who was acquitted. Joe [Joseph Wayne] Davis, a fellow black officer, shot Navarre was then held for murder. Joe David was charged with manslaughter. After several deadlocked juries, he was eventually sentenced to serve 3-8 years in Arizona's state prison at Florence. He was paroled and spent his life in Omaha, Nebraska. The book was owned by Arthur Wahl [Jr] who was in his junior year. As the son of a Baptist pastor, he was clearly well accepted by his LDS classmates as is evidenced by the large number of signatures and thoughtful notes. There are several advertisements for businesses that are no longer there, and a couple of in drawings by two students. Bound in brown cloth showing a view of the Superstition Mountains with raised lettering, binding rubbed along the spine and edges, some wear to corners. A very good copy.
