1929 first English edition, Horace Liveright (NY), 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches tall purple cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, pink lettering and gilt design to front cover and spine, 336 pp. Light rubbing and edgewear to covers, with staining to the rear cover and slight bumping to lower tip of front cover and a small bump to the middle of the front board. Prior owner name and date (1936) to blank front free-endpaper. Small (1/4-inch) bookworm hole to upper margin of about 100 pages in the first third of the book. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket (with a striking art deco illustration by Paul Wenck in aqua, gold and black) which has a couple of closed edge tears but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~F~ A scarce English translation of this early work of renowned German author Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen (1884 - 1945), whose best-known book was Diary of a Man in Despair, a journal in which he expressed his passionate opposition to Adolf Hitler and Nazism. He was eventually arrested by the Nazis and died of typhus at the Dachau concentration camp. Sven Discovers Paradise is Jenny Covan's adept translation of Sven Entdeckt das Paradies. 'When Sven sets his Nordic face towards Egypt, he is blissfully unconscious of the series of exotic adventures which are destined to cross the trail of his sober engineering project .
