Swimming Against The Org Chart (Paperback)

Paperback. What happens when you spend thirty-five years climbing through corporate America-only to discover that the org chart was never built to explain your worth? At fifty-eight, Darren Mell was laid off for the first time in his life. The meeting lasted minutes. The silence afterward lasted much longer. His wife was undergoing cancer treatment. His resume had not been rebuilt in nearly twenty years. And the modern job market seemed less interested in experience than in whether an algorithm liked the right combination of words.Swimming Against the Org Chartis a funny, candid, and deeply human survival guide for anyone trying to earn a living without surrendering their dignity, family, identity, or sense of humor along the way.Drawing on more than three decades in healthcare, boiler-room sales, corporate leadership, and global team building, Mell tells the stories behind the slogans: the executive who wore a superhero cape around the office, the fraudulent sales culture that punished honesty, the team nobody wanted that became a powerhouse, the employee whose life changed because one leader saw potential instead of a resume, the hollow town halls, the endless reorganizations, and the strange loneliness of becoming unemployed after a lifetime of work. But this is not a corporate-bashing book. This is a book about PEOPLE, the ones all of us interact with on a daily basis. It is a book about how to survive the Fishbowl without becoming one of the creatures you once criticized. It is about leading with empathy without avoiding accountability. Building trust one conversation at a time. Knowing when to speak, when to document, when to adapt, and when to swim in the opposite direction. It is about doing excellent work while remembering that the company is not the main character in your life. Each chapter blends workplace memoir, corporate satire, hard-earned advice, Chapter Takeaways, and Fishbowl Philosophy Tips readers can carry into their own careers.Inside, you will learn how to: - Recognize the difference between authority and leadership- Protect yourself from unclear expectations and shifting strategies- Build visibility without becoming performative- Network like a human being instead of a walking business card- Coach people without humiliating them- Handle narcissistic leaders without surrendering your judgment- Preserve your identity when a title disappears- Measure success through more than promotions, rankings, and applause- Remain ambitious without making your family pay for it- Leave the Fishbowl with your humanity intactMell does not pretend he always got it right. He examines the moments when good intentions backfired, when pressure followed him home, when empathy became avoidance, and when he came dangerously close to becoming the kind of boss he disliked. The result is not a polished executive sermon from the top floor. It is wisdom from the middle-where real people carry real pressure, produce real results, and still try to make it home for dinner. For leaders, employees, sales professionals, job seekers, career changers, and anyone who has ever sat in a meeting wondering whether they were the only person who could see how strange everything had become, Swimming Against the Org Chart offers reassurance, perspective, and a better definition of success. The Fishbowl may shape your days.It does not contain the whole ocean.
