TNM classification is the nomenclature that is used to describe cancer progression: T=Tumour, which has subcategories depending on the size; N=Node, which is the number of lymph nodes affected; M=Metastases, which describes how many other, secondary tumours have arisen since the primary tumour was detected. This nomenclature is standardized to ensure that clinicians worldwide use the same terms. This volume provides the international standard for the description of the anatomical extent of cancer to assist physicians in treatment planning and evaluation of results: prognosis; information exchange; and measuring changes in screening and patient care efforts. This "pocket" size book contains all of the information clinicians need to know to classify a tumour in any patient. Fifth Edition

TNM is the most widely used system for classifying the extent of cancer spread. The Fifth Edition contains important new additions and modifications. Among these are:
* A revised classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma reflecting the needs of radiotherapists
* A revised testis tumour classification that incorporates serum markers into staging
* A new classification of gestational trophoblastic tumours that combines anatomic with nonanatomic risk factors
* A new classification of fallopian tube carcinomas
* Important changes in the classification of prostate, bladder, and kidney tumours reflecting advances in urology
* Changes in the regional lymph node classification of gastric carcinoma
* Expansion of the soft tissue tumour classification

These and other changes will enhance the value of TNM in treatment planning and as a prognostic indicator.
