Tokyo 1950-60, Takamizawa.Oban color woodblock reprint print of an Edo period work, sheet: 39.5 x 26 cm., excellent work, 7 colors, superb impression & registry, publisher's seal on the back: Hanmoto Takamizawa, else back clean as issued.RARE *** Utamaro Kitagata, (1750 -1806), a Japanese Woodblock reprint, hand woodblock printed in full color, a stunning copy of the original. . *** SUBJECT: This print depicts five young and beautiful prostitutes or Geisha of the Edo period. The girl to the far right holds a fan with "KITA" [north] written on it. A lovely period example and fine reprint. . *** CONDITION: Very good example, a bit of minor bump to two corners, else excellent registry & impression. Verso clean. . *** WHO WAS KITAGAWA UTAMARO: [c.?1753-31 October 1806]: He was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of the Ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints, especially for his portraits of beautiful women, or Bijin-ga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. . Utamaro's work reached Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, where it was very popular, enjoying particular acclaim in France. He influenced the European Impressionists, particularly with his use of partial views and his emphasis on light and shade, which they imitated.
