Albany, thick octavo, 536 p., 32 plates (4 chromo-lithographs), 8 maps (5 partly colored), plus text illustrations, tables, forms, and errata. ***CONTENT: Colvin (1847-1920) was a lawyer, author, illustrator, environmentalist, and topographical engineer largely responsible for the creation of New York's Forest Preserve and the Adirondack Park. With crews of up to 100 men, he directed surveying parties throughout the Adirondack "wilderness" and determined the altitudes of most of the highest peaks, including Mount Marcy. As the book title indicates, this volume presents detailed and varied scientific and environmental information on the Adirondacks. The abundant engraved plates and maps illustrate mountain, lake, and forest scenery, sketches of the region surveyed, surveying equipment and methods, and more. This volume is still of value to modern surveyors, naturalists, and adventurers that visit the region. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG+ copy, bound in the original brick-colored, pebbled cloth, with an embossed decoration of a triangulation tower on the front cover, and gilt titles on the backstrip. The covers and spine are clean and well preserved, with light wear confined to the extremities. Backstrip lettering complete and legible. External joints solid, internal hinges starting but strong, binding very firm. The text pages and illustrations are fresh, clean and bright. No foxing or stains. The plates and most maps are in near-Fine to Fine condition, but three large folding maps have serious (but repairable) tears, as typical. ***PROVENANCE: The front pastedown bears a small presentation stamp: "Compliments of James H. Loomis, Senator, 30th District, 1880-1881." Also on that page is an old library bookplate. Blind stamp on title page, and evidence of card pocket on rear pastedown.
