The Grand Junction Canal was built 1793-1805 From Brentford on the River Thames to Braunston in Northants, to improve the links between London and the Midlands, bypassing the difficult reaches of the Thames in the Oxford area. At the time of writing fashionable London society would travel along it as far as Uxbridge to admire the picturesque scenery along the route. This may have provided a market for the sale of this superbly illustrated guidebook by John Hassell (c.1767-1825), landscape painter and writer on the art of drawing in watercolour. A fine binding with hand coloured plates in good condition, although lacking one called for. (Abbey, Scenery, 30).
