FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 2 VOLUMES EACH WITH ITS OWN TITLE PAGE, 1796-97, TRANSLATED FROM THE GERMAN BY THOMAS HOLCROFT. 4to, approximately 280 x 215 mm, 11 x 8½ inches, folding map as frontispiece, 19 folding engravings, 7 after PIRANESI, 7 pages of musical notations. Pages: Volume 1, pages: xviii, lacks half-title, [1]-506; Volume 2, with half-title, pages: xii, [1],-656, [1] - directions to binder, bound in full mottled calf, expertly rebacked with original spines relaid, tips of corners repaired, maroon and green gilt lettered labels to spines, floral gilt decorated spines, gilt pattern to edges of covers, marbled endpapers. Pale age-browning and foxing to map and plates, with offset to facing pages, music pages have slight pale browning, a few top margins have strip of pale browning, shallow vertical crease to 4 leaves, due to folding plate, 4 small closed tears to margins neatly repaired, nowhere near text, occasional small mark or fox spot but text mostly clean, James Whatman engraved armorial bookplate to each pastedown, small old ink name crossed out at top of title page in Volume 1, otherwise a very good tight handsome set.
