439p. A hardcover book bound in full brown calf with blind-stamped, ornamental designs in the boards. Leather is scuffed and has a crackly texture, most conspicuously on the spine. Small tear at head of spine, corners wearing through, and frot board starting to crack off from the bottom, though still securely enough attached for mindful handling. First and last two leaves are coming loose and have early owners' inscriptions and notes on them. Binding is generally limp due to centuries of handling, but as with the boards, holds well enough for gentle handling and reading purposes. Pages deply browned and foxed with age, but still quite legible. Occasional ink notations by a very early owner, but most text unmarked. A commentary on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John, with all text in Latin. Daniel Tossanus (1541-1602) was a French Protestant theologian who narrowly escaped death at the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. He occupied various positions as chaplain and teacher around France and Germany as his Reformed (Calvinist) leanings put him on the wrong side of Lutheran authorities. This particular work is dedicated to Frederick V, Elector Palatine in the Holy Roman Empire and King of Bohemia, under whose father Tossanus served. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 186704
