Beschreibung
Folio broadsheet newspaper. 19 x 13 inches. [4] pp. Extremities a little worn and some slight tears along lower part of fold but otherwise a very good copy. Newspaper stamp. Early inscription above title, Supplement to Gazette of Lord Howe's Victory - Names and Rates of Prizes. Decorated with wood engraved coats of arms and Canterbury Cathedral at head of title. The chief news in this copy, occupying nearly half the newspaper is a report of the victory of the British fleet under Lord Howe over the French in a battle which came to be known as the Glorious First of June after the day on which it was fought (the French name for it was Prairial). This was the first major naval engagement of the French Revolutionary War, although the British victory was somewhat tempered by the escape of the important grain convoy the French fleet was escorting. the Gazette observing: 'It is said that the French Convoy from America is arrived at Bourdeaux.' Many of the windows illuminated in London, to celebrate the victory, however, were broken by political mobs while the term Jacobin resounded in the air. Other foreign news is largely from the West Indies (Nassau) and the USA (New York and resolutions of the Congress). Elsewhere in the paper is a good supply of local news, sale notices, grain prices in London and Kent and hop intelligence. Items include the notice of meetings of the Maidstone to Ashford and Dover to Barham Downs Turnpike Trustees, journeymen breeches- makers and journeyman tin-man required and a' Welch Heifer' strayed and a Bay Mare stolen or strayed.
