Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant or optional concern for higher education—it is already reshaping teaching, learning, assessment, and institutional decision-making. Students are using AI. Faculty are experimenting with it. Institutions are struggling to respond with clarity, consistency, and confidence.

Leadership in Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence reframes AI not as a technical problem or a threat to academic integrity, but as a leadership challenge—one that demands ethical grounding, governance, and human judgment rather than fear-driven bans or unchecked adoption.

Written for academic leaders and faculty, this book provides a practical, values-based framework for engaging AI responsibly while preserving the core mission of higher education. It moves beyond hype and reaction to address the questions institutions are actually facing:

• What does responsible AI use mean in practice?

• How should AI be governed across teaching, learning, and operations?

• How can academic integrity be preserved without relying on flawed detection tools?

• What competencies do faculty and leaders need now?

• How can AI support learning without replacing human thinking?

Organized into four parts, the book integrates ethical foundations, governance models, teaching and assessment strategies, and organizational change guidance. Each chapter translates principles into action, offering ready-to-use tools such as governance workflows, syllabus language, integrity frameworks, AI literacy competency maps, and decision-making templates that institutions can adapt immediately.

At the center of the book is a human-in-the-loop philosophy: AI may assist academic work, but responsibility, judgment, and accountability must remain human. By embedding this principle into policy, pedagogy, and leadership practice, the book helps institutions move from reactive confusion to intentional design.

Designed for provosts, deans, department chairs, faculty, instructional designers, doctoral students, and higher education policymakers, Leadership in Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence is both a guide and a call to action—for institutions committed to leading thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively in an AI-enabled academic future.
