First Edition. 2 ff bb (non coevi), 6 ff nn, 501 pp, 3 pp nn, 2 ff bb (non coevi). Marca ai titoli con sfera armillare tra le figure del Tempo e di Ercole. Su un cartiglio è riportato il motto: "Indefessus agendo" Legatura settecentesca in piena pelle con triplo filetto in oro ai piatti e dorso diviso in sei scomparti con dorature e titolo in oro. Le parti superiori ed inferiori dei dorsi sono stati restaurati. Tagli dorati. Interno in perfetto stato di conservazione. Rara prima edizione di questo trattato (basato su scritti di Aristotele, Galeno e Aldrovandi) in cui il Jonston cercò di organizzare la conoscenza scientifica dei suoi tempi in dieci categorie: il cielo (stelle, luna, sole, ecc.), gli elementi (fuoco, aria, ecc.), le meteore (comete, folgori, terremoti, ecc), i fossili (petrolio, ambra, carne fossile (!), metalli, ecc.), le piante (aloe, cachi, ecc.), gli uccelli (aquila, cuculo, ecc.), i quadrupedi (alce, asino, unicorno, rana (!), serpente (!), ecc.), gli invertebrati (cicala, mosca, formica, verme, ecc.), i pesci (anguilla, balena, ecc.) e gli uomini (sangue, sudore, pigmei, giganti, ecc.). Jan Jonston nacque nel 1603 a Szamotul (Polonia), da famiglia di origini scozzesi. Nel 1622 si recò in Scozia per studiare la lingua ebraica e la filosofia. In seguito andò a Leyden dove si diede agli studi di medicina e si spostò in varie città del nord Europa (Francoforte sull'Oder, Lipsia, ecc.); fu poi a Londra dove continuò gli studi di medicina e dove aumentò la sua fama. Viaggiò molto per l'Europa in veste di precettore; nel 1642 divenne docente di medicina a Francoforte. Durante la guerra contro la Svezia, si ritirò a Liegnitz (in Slesia) dove morì nel 1675. Jonston ci lascia numerosi scritti in diversi campi: medicina, filosofia, storia e scienze naturali. Tra queste ricordiamo: "Idea universae medicinae practicae" (Amsterdam, 1644), "De Naturae constantiae" (Amsterdam, 1652) e la sua ponderosa "Historia naturalis" (1650-1653).
