The maps are printed on better quality paper and have fared better. The folding map of Jerusalem a little weak along middle fold, otherwise all are in very good condition, a very good, well-margined edition, not heavily trimmed. Size 38 x 26cm (15 x 10 inches)While Protestants are usually given the bulk of the credit for early modern biblical scholarship, this is an example of Catholic biblical scholarship formulated as part of a polemic against Protestantism. Christian van Adrichem's professional training as surveyor and his exhaustive studies of the Bible, the writings of Josephus, and early pilgrim narratives enabled him to produce these most influential Holy Land maps of the sixteenth century without ever having visited the region. The plan of Jerusalem present here has been described as "the most dramatic and important of the 16th century" (Kenneth Nebenzahl, Maps of the Holy Land, 33). Adrichomius is the latinised name of the Dutch Catholic priest Christian Kruik van Adrichem (1533-1585). His Theatrum, first published in 1590, and Jerusalem, sicut Christi tempore fluit (Cologne, 1584) have been described as "authoritative and striking in their scope and method" and important for Adrichomius's "fixing of the stations of the cross in the European imagination" (Williams, p. 161).
