Beschreibung

Entire Vol. 100 offered. Contemporary cloth. Ink stamp on title page. Corners of covers a bit worn. Else Very Good. If you need an offprint of the paper, it's going to cost you over $20,000. 'John von Neumann single-handedly invented game theory, introducing the general mathematical concept of 'strategy' in a paper on games of chance ([1928]: 295-320). This contained the proof of his 'minimax' theorem that says 'a strategy exists that guarantees, for each player, a maximum payoff assuming that the adversary acts so as to minimize that payoff'.' (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, p.473, under the 1944 monograph co-authored with Morgenstern). 'Our considerations will lead to the application of the mathematical theory of 'games of strategy' developed by one of us in several successive stages in 1928 and 1940-1951. The first phases of this work were published: J. von Neumann, 'Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele,' . . . The subsequent completion of the theory, as well as the more detailed elaboration of the considerations of loc. cit. above, are published here for the first time.' (Von Neumann & Morgenstern: The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, 1944, p.1). Von Neumann's 1928 paper 'contained a long and difficult existence proof for the equilibrium of the two- person, discrete game. . . . Twenty-five years later, George B. Dantzig showed how linear programming provides a constructive proof for finding the solution to any two-person matrix game.' (Gass & Assad: Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, p.36).
