Second edition in English, from the original French edition of 1747. Louis-Jean Lévesque de Pouilly (1691-1750) was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He was a friend of Nicolas Fréret and Lord Bolingbroke, met Isaac Newton in England, and was probably the Frenchman with whom David Hume stayed in 1734 on his trip to Reims.
