An early nineteenth century collection of comic plays from writers including John Gay and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Bound from the parts in half-leather, with a spine label, gilt lettering, and marbled paper-covered boards. Bears the bookplate of Frank Noyce on the front pastedown, and his signature on the front free endpaper. Each play includes a frontis, with occasional in-text illustrations. With six plates in The Real Devil's Walk, and five each in The Epping Hunt, The Devil's Walk, and Bombastes Furioso. Comprises: An undated edition of The Devil to Pay; or, The Wives Metamorphosed by C. Coffey. An 1823 edition of A Trip to Scarborough, A Comedy by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. An undated edition of The Belle's Stratagem, A Comedy by Mrs. Cowley. An 1823 edition of The Beggars' Opera, A Comic Opera by John Gay. An 1823 edition of The Duenna, A Comic Opera by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. An 1824 edition of The Mayor of Garratt, A Farce by Sam. Foote. An 1800 edition of The School for Scandal, A Comedy, also by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, but here published anonymously. An undated edition of The Inconstant, A Comedy by G. Farquhar. An 1824 edition of Venice Preserved, A Tragedy by Thomas Otway. An 1830 edition of The Real Devil's Walk, "not by" Professor Porson. An 1829 edition of The Epping Hunt by Thomas Hunt. An undated edition of The Devil's Walk, A Poem by Professor Porson. An 1830 edition of Bombastes Furioso, A Burlesque Tragic Opera by William Barnes Rhodes. In a full calf binding. There is only mild wear to the extremities, with just mild bumping, rubbing to the edges, hinges, and boards, and some loss to the spine label. The front hinge is starting but still firm, and the tail of the spine leather is coming away. The binding is generally tight and firm. Internally the pages have intermittent scattered spots, with slight browning to the page edges, becoming prominent to the first few pages and pages 58 to 68. Good Only.
